Mimo Wearable Baby Monitor

Mimo is a smart, wearable baby monitor, designed by Rest Devices Inc., a privately held company headquartered in Boston. It comes with sensors that are fitted into a onesie to monitor a child’s breathing, body temperature, and movement when sleeping. According to the company, Mimo helps parents stay connected with their little ones, regardless of where they are.

Company History

Rest Devices Inc. was founded in 2011 by three MIT graduates; Dulcie Madden, Carson Darling, and Thomas Lipoma. The company develops sensors that track how people sleep. Rest Devices raised $1.3M in funding to create the Mimo Smart Baby Monitor, a product they claim gives parents information about their baby whenever they need it. Rest Devices launched the Mimo monitor in January 2014.

Product Lines

Mimo markets two different product lines:

Mimo Smart Baby Breathing & Activity Monitor

The Mimo Smart Baby Breathing & Activity gadget is their flagship product. This gadget claims to be the world’s first wearable baby monitor. The onesie is woven from 100% organic material and is machine washable. The turtle is chew-safe, water-resistant, and large enough not to be a choking hazard. The respiration sensors do not contact the wearer’s skin.

Mimo Smart Baby Movement Monitor

The movement monitor tracks breathing and activity, but is designed as a fitted crib sheet instead of being wearable. The crib sheet is designed to fit a standard 52” by 26” mattress. According to Mimo, the movement monitor is functional in all mattress forms. All you need to do is to tuck the corners in as instructed for it to work.

Set-up and Configuration

The onesie has two green stripes that contain thin sensors. These sensors gather data from the child and send it directly to the parent’s tab or phone. The turtle comprises an accelerometer that detects baby position and motion. It also includes a respiration sensor clip that gathers data from the sensors on the onesie. The turtle sends this information to the lily pad via Bluetooth. The lilypad seamlessly integrates with the Wi-Fi around the home to transmit real-time data to the caregivers’ tablet or smartphone.

In a likely nod to liability concerns, Rest Devices states that Mimo Smart Baby Monitor is not a medical device, nor is it designed to prevent cases of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Its primary function, according to the company, is to track your child’s vital stats.

Target Market

Mimo Smart Baby Sensor targets parents and caregivers with small children aged 0 to 12 months. It claims to reassure parents that their child is sleeping soundly and in the right position without having to peep into the crib every 10 minutes.

Studies and Independent Verification

There are no published studies that examine the efficacy of the Mimo monitors.

Pricing

You can purchase the Mimo Smart Baby Monitor from numerous retailers. The base price for the Mimo Smart Baby starter kit is approximately $199.99. This kit includes three kimonos, 1 Lilypad, and one turtle. Additional 2-pack onesies retail at $29.99.

Smart Phone Connection

Mimo Smart Baby Monitor transmits data directly to a smartphone. It comes with a free mobile app that renders a graphical representation of the data collected. After you purchase a Mimo Smart Baby Tracker, you need to download the app from Google Play or Apple Store.

Once installed, sync it with the turtle set, and then proceed to set up your account and adjust notification based on your child’s age and where they are with sleep training and then activate it. You should start receiving notifications including breathing rate, temperature, position activity as soon as you are done setting up.
